Those who refuse to learn history...

as true as it is, I always hated that quote. even though progess can be made in whatever field as time passes, technology is created, improved upon, etc. inevitable cycles can be observed throughout history, as well as the minutae of everyday living.
One example just occurred to me as I was half-paying attention to the midday news. GWB was making a statement during a press conference about the conservation of gasoline, urging consumers not to drive when unnecessary (I find this interesting as he has close ties to the oil industry). While it shouldnt have, the next image that was shown kind of shocked me. While its becoming more frequent, there was a run to gas stations by consumers: cars lined up by the mile in order to obtain the oh-so crucial necessity of runnning your car. The last time I had seen or noticed an image of this sort was during the 60s/70s when there were gas shortages due to the price gouging of OPEC. Though it seems that petroleum has become the new "drug of choice", that people cannot survive without it, this situation has been around for quite some time; anyone that has taken an economics course can explain the law of scarcity. Until new technology (some of which already exist) is accepted and developed, oil will remain a big industry, pollution will continue to rise, and the US dependence on foreign petroleum distributors will continue to yoke the government to take brash actions (like the Persian Gulf Wars.)
I wish I could be teaching right now. of course, the discussion would be a little less one-sided.

I have about, 90% guaranteed a job, but NOT YET. I still have to go through orientation and complete the employment process. Hence I don't have a job yet. give it a couple of days, THEN you can express the excitement that mother gave last night at dinner. yes that was sarcastic.

Sorry I haven't been around to post anything. For the past however long I've been in a mad scramble to ameliorate my job situation... to no avail. that in mind, i haven't been in much of a blogging mood, just more of a depressed- then pissed -then depressed again. I've been trying to unstress myself by fixing and remaking computers out of JAS's spare parts. heh. not working.
also, check out this article on the iPod Nano. The article has been on Fark, /., stereogum, and lord knows how many other sites. I know them.. kinda... sorta... through association. I love playing "6 degrees".

The police are looting. This has been confirmed by several independent sources. Some of the looting might be “legitimate” in as much as that word has any meaning in this context. They have broken into ATMs and safes: confirmed. We have eyewitnesses to this. They have taken dozens of SUVs from dealerships ostensibly for official use. They have also looted gun stores and pawn shops for all the small arms, supposedly to prevent “criminals” from doing so. But who knows their true intentions. We have an inside source in the NOPD who says that command and control is in chaos. He reports that command lapses more than 24 hours between check-ins, and that most of the force are “like deer in the headlights.” NOPD already had a reputation for corruption, but I am telling you now that the people we’ve been talking to say they are not recognizing the NOPD as a legitimate authority anymore, since cops have been seen looting in Walmarts and forcing people out of stores so they could back up SUVs and loot them…

And right after the last 'people are still somewhat normal' post with the swearing guy, no less. Humanity sucks.
